The Alte Nationalgalerie, situated on the Museum's Island, was built 1866-76, after plans by F.A. Stüler commissioned by King Frederick William IV. The building, reminiscent of a Greek temple, decorated with an equestrian statue of the royal 'architect', houses contemporary paintings of the 19th century, among other works by Adolf Menzel, including the work 'Balkonzimmer' (Balcony Room) and the 'Eisenwalzwerk', and Max Liebermann. Also works by French impressionists as well as Christian Daniel Rauch, Gottfried Schadow and Reinhold Begas are exhibited.

In the Alten Nationalgalerie, one can also admire famous 19th-century sculptures, like the Princesses' Group by Johann Gottfried Schadow, furthermore works by Berthel Thorwaldsen, Antonio Canova, Reinhold Begas, Adolf von Hildebrand as well as Constantin Meunier. A sculpture collection of the Schinkel-time can also be seen at the Friedrichswerderschen Church.

After extensive renovations, the museum was re-opened in its full glory at the end of 2001.
