The Berlin Botanical Garden has its origin as princely kitchen and herb garden at the Berlin Stadtschloss with pleasure garden. The botanical garden was created as an 'example garden' in 1679 in Schöneberg on the order by the Great Elector and relocated to Dahlem around the turn of the century. The German botanist Adolf Engler created in the years from 1899 to 1910 one of the world's largest and most important botanical garden.

On an area of around 42ha, over 18000 plants can be admired, which are all allocated by scientific aspects to individual departments. There are plant-geographical sorted open land (13ha), the copse section (14ha) with around 1800 tree and shrub varieties, a utility and medicinal plants section, 16 greenhouses, a large pond, the tropical house and a scent and touch garden for the visually impaired.
The Botanical Garden is not only a teaching and research institute and education place, but is used by the Berlin citizens most of all, as a recreational park. A garden restaurant - Unter den Eichen - is ideal for a little rest, but is only open in the summer.
