Museum's foundation history

The Märkische Museum at the Köllnischen Park was opened more than 90 years ago.

When the Märkische Provinzial-Museum was opened in 1908 it had already a very changeable history behind it. The nomination of Berlin as Reichs-capital in 1871 abetted the set-up of a cultural-historical museum. Many proposals of such a museum were rejected. It was considered to unite the gold and silver objects kept at the Städtischen Asservatorium, the items from the archive and the pictures that were hanging at the office of the city councillor and open them to the public. The objects came together in the so-called archive. The sections Archive and Bibliotheca were extended by a third section, Collections. The alderman Ernst Friedel was appointed "Kommissarius for Archive, Bibliotheca and Collections". The Märkische Provinzial-Museum emerged then from this section. By decree of the municipal authorities this museum was founded as a Local Museum on the 9th of October 1874. The population was at this time very interested even the royal family was in favour for such a museum.
